Breaking Down Language

Language covers language comprehension and use. Receptive Language is the common term used to describe language comprehension. Expressive Language is the term used to describe language use (e.g., speaking, sign language, writing).

Receptive Language refers to language comprehension. Language comprehension includes a person's ability to understand verbal and written language. Expressive Language refers to language expression. Language expression includes a person's ability to express their thoughts and ideas via verbal output, written output, sign language, and gestures.
