Toy Tips: Legos and Blocks

Playing is a fun way to incorporate language development. This blog series was created by a Speech Language Pathologist as a helpful tool for parents and therapists to help support your child's language development at home.

Let’s talk about Legos, Blocks and Language!

Tip 1: Model Vocabulary!

Model naturally occurring vocabulary words while playing. Try to repeat the same handful of words to increase word exposure and support word acquisition.

Examples of verbs, adjectives, nouns, and category labels are to the left!

Tip 2: Physically and Verbally Model Sequences!

Examples of 3 step sequences:

▫️Plan ➡️ Find ➡️ Build

▫️Review Directions ➡️ Sort ➡️ Create

▫️Pick a Design ➡️ Find ➡️ Build

Tip 2: Get Creative!

Change the typical routine by trying out the ideas below:

  • Three cups game! Hide the Lego under a cup, move the cups around, and find that Lego!

  • Family Time! Play family with a twist, use the Lego people. This will help generalize play skills.

  • Lego Pool Party! Use the blue Lego sheet as the pool or use a bin filled with water. Sensory play is always fun!

  • Lego Drawing! Build a Lego creation. Then you can trace or copy your creation!

  • Lego Bowling - Create a big tower. Then use any ball in the house to bowl to knock it down!

  • Add an obstacle course - pick up a Lego after each part of the course to add to your build!
