Toy Tips: Bowling Set

Playing is a fun way to incorporate language development. This blog series was created by a Speech Language Pathologist as a helpful tool for parents and therapists to help support your child's language development at home.

Let's talk about Bowling Set Tips!

Tip 1: Be Creative by Adding Stickers!

Create stickers with different "rules" or "directions." Let your child make them too! Support following directions and language skills. For the little ones, the stickers could have actions to follow like jumping, spinning, or singing. For older children, make up more challenging directions like, “name 3 fruits.”

Stick the stickers on the bottom or the back of the pins. Feel free to talk about prepositions while you complete this step.

After a pin is knocked over, look at the sticker and follow the direction. To make the game trickier (kids love this!) combine pins when more than one are knocked over. For example: If a child knocks over two pins, combine the directions. “First, jump. Then, spin!”

Swap out the stickers to keep your child engaged. This is an easy way to extend play time. We are working to extend attention spans all the time. It is challenging nowadays!

Tip 2: Physically and Verbally Model Sequences!

Check out the examples to the right! These examples give you the option to create short sequences like 2-3 step sequences all the way up to longer sequences like 6-9 steps.

Start with a shorter sequence. Then build onto the sequence by adding one action or step at a time.

Remember, sequencing play actions is a developmental skill! By 2 years old, your child should begin sequencing actions.

Tip 3: Teach Vocabulary with Synonyms and Antonyms!

Synonyms and antonyms are an easy way to expand and grow vocabulary.

Teaching synonyms gives the opportunity to grow language from simple words to higher level words. For example, “crash” is an early vocabulary word while “collide” is a later vocabulary word.

Antonyms are a great way to establish early analytical skills. It teaches early comparison skills - opposites!
